چکیده

INTRODUCTION In this study of human cartilage, we tested the hypothesis that the magic angle effect is reduced more in MT-weighted images than in T2-weighted images. Articular cartilage has three structural zones distinguished by collagen fiber orientations: superficial zone, transitional zone, and radial zone. When collagen fibers are oriented at 54.7°with respect to the main magnetic field of the magnet (B0), dipole-dipole interactions go to zero, resulting in a prolongation of the T2 relaxation time. This phenomenon is named as the "magic angle effect". In MRI, the magic angle effect appears as bright regions and often confounds accurate interpretation of these areas [1]. Magnetization transfer (MT) contrast reflects the interaction of free water protons with protons associated with the macromolecules (such as proteins) and membranes in biological tissues. Quantitative magnetization transfer imaging based on MT model will give the fractions of the macromolecules in the whole tissue, which are less affected by the measuring parameters and conditions [2]. METHODS Sample Preparation Five specimens of normal human articular cartilage were obtained from cadaveric donors through the Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network (with Rush University IRB approval), and frozen at –80oC until experimentation. Each specimen was full-thickness

Analytical determination of the chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) contrast in molecular magnetic resonance imaging

Magnetic resonance based on molecular imaging allows tracing contrast agents thereby facilitating early diagnosis of diseases in a non-invasive fashion that enhances the soft tissue with high spatial resolution. Recently, the exchange of protons between the contrast agent and water, known as the chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) effect, has been measured by applying a suitable pulse ...

Effect of Bias in Contrast Agent Concentration Measurement on Estimated Pharmacokinetic Parameters in Brain Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Studies

Introduction: Pharmacokinetic (PK) modeling of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) is widely applied in tumor diagnosis and treatment evaluation. Precision analysis of the estimated PK parameters is essential when they are used as a measure for therapy evaluation or treatment planning. In this study, the accuracy of PK parameters in brain DCE...

The Assessment of Structural Changes in MS Plaques and Normal Appearing White Matter Using Quantitative Magnetization Transfer Imaging (MTI)

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS), affecting mostly young people at a mean age of 30 years. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most specific and sensitive methods in diagnosing and detecting the evolution of multiple sclerosis disease. But it does not have the ability to differentiate between distinct histopathologic...

Detection of sodium ions in anisotropic environments through spin-lock NMR.

A new method for selectively detecting sodium ions in anisotropic environments is presented. A spin-lock (SL) sequence, followed by a coherence transfer pulse, generates rank-two zero-quantum coherences, and converts them into observable transverse magnetization. The quadrupolar polarization is only generated when there are residual quadrupolar couplings in the sample, and provided the SL field...

Comparing Relative Contrast in Three-dimensional Double-echo Steady State With Routine Sequences for a Better Diagnosis of Knee Cartilage Anomalies

Aims This study compared relative contrast values in three-dimensional Double Echo Steady State (DESS) sequences with two flip angles of 40 and 90 degrees and other routine sequences. The obtained data could help to prove the effects of this sequence, compared to the other routine sequences; accordingly, it could be applied for better detection of lesions resulting from cartilage abnormalities....
